Importance of Early Diagnosis

It is important to find oral cancer as early as possible when it can be treated more successfully.

 

African Americans in Florida are less likely than other groups to have oral cancer diagnosed at early stage. An oral cancer examination can detect early signs of cancer. Oral cancer exams are painless and quick — and takes only a few minutes. Unfortunately, few adults in Florida report having had a recent oral cancer exam. This is especially true for African Americans and Hispanic adults.

 

Your regular dental check-up is an excellent opportunity to have the exam. During the exam, your dentist or dental hygienist will check your face, neck, lips, and entire mouth.

This graph shows how African Americans are the least likely to be diagnosed at early stages. Early diagnosis is the key to curing this disease.
